Shop the Kitchen

Four large cookies sounds very reasonable if you say “four” quickly and don’t spend too much time on “large.” That’s the energy we’re bringing to this little baking session. A few useful tools, something warm from the oven, and no need to turn the kitchen into a bakery.

A little help with the dough

An OXO large cookie scoop helps portion the dough without wrestling it off two spoons. For the four-cookie recipe, still divide the whole batch into four equal portions; a scoop is a helper, not the boss of the recipe. A colorful silicone mixing spatula is handy for folding in chocolate chips and getting the dough out of the bowl. We paid for the butter. Let’s use the butter.

Give the cookies some personal space

A Nordic Ware Naturals half-sheet pan and precut parchment sheets give those four dough balls room to spread. A pan that fits the oven makes the whole operation a little easier. The parchment is the small convenience here: line the pan, bake, and make cleanup a little less exciting.

The hardest part is waiting

The recipe calls for ten minutes of cooling on the pan. This is an excellent time to stare at the cookies as though that helps. After that, an OXO silicone cookie spatula can help lift them, and a wire cooling rack gives them a place to finish cooling. What appeals to me about this little lineup is that it also works when four cookies mysteriously turns into a full batch.

Four cookies, a quiet kitchen, and a very good reason to make coffee. If a few more people appear when the oven timer goes off, there’s always Best Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies for a full-batch kind of day.

Taco Night Deserves a Little Drama

Dinner already comes with plenty of decisions. How much cheese? Which salsa? Is this a two-taco situation or are we kidding ourselves? I’d happily let a tiny dinosaur handle one job: holding the taco upright while the good stuff goes in.

Put a dinosaur on the table

These Funwares dinosaur taco holders have an actual job: holding dinner upright. They’re silly, and they give taco night a little personality. For a different kind of dinner traffic, there are Fred Taco Truck holders, too. Apparently, dinner has transportation options now. Either would be fun for serving folded tortillas filled with Slow-Cooker Salsa Chicken.

Let everyone build their own

A divided topping tray gives cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and the other fixings their own spots. A few mini serving tongs would help with passing things around. That’s the part I’d appreciate: put the choices on the table and let everyone assemble dinner. Less “What do you want on yours?” More “It’s all right there.” Try the same setup with Big Mac Tacos/Burritos.

Give the sides a little attention

A handheld citrus squeezer comes in handy for the lemon and lime in Guacamole Hummus. The colorful little dip bowls would be a cheerful way to serve it alongside the tacos. The bowls can come back out for salsa or toppings another night. Cute things that get more than one dinner invitation are easier to make room for.

A little Mexican Rice on the side, the filling in the middle of the table, and everyone can settle the important question for themselves: just how much cheese is enough?

Soup Night Could Use a Sea Monster

A bowl of soup and a piece of homemade bread already have a lot going for them. But a little Nessie peeking out of the serving setup? That’s the sort of kitchen nonsense I can get behind. Soup, bread, and a completely unnecessary but very welcome dinner guest.

Start with the soup—and the sea monster

The OTOTO Nessie soup ladle is shaped like a little long-necked creature, and the idea makes me smile. I’d pair it with Chicken Orzo Soup and call dinner slightly more entertaining. A Lodge 6-quart enameled Dutch oven handles the more serious business of the oven-braised Beef Stew on the site. Choose the pot size and oven rating to suit the recipe, including the lid and knob.

Make room for the bread

With Easy Sourdough Bread, a Danish dough whisk can bring the dough together, while a bench scraper helps with handling it on the counter. What appeals to me is having a tool for the sticky stages of bread making. “Rustic” is a lovely word for a loaf; it’s less useful when describing the entire countertop.

Make tonight work for another night

A set of soup bowls with handles would make a cozy serving option. And Souper Cubes 1-cup freezer trays keep leftover stew in separate freezer portions. The separate compartments are the draw: another dinner can start with a portion instead of one enormous frozen block. Follow your recipe’s storage guidance and the tray’s instructions.

Soup in the bowls, bread on the table, and a little saved for tomorrow. That’s a dinner plan I can get behind. Nessie is just there to supervise.

Breakfast, But Make It a Little Extra

Some mornings call for something ready in the refrigerator. Others have room for pancakes and a second cup of coffee. I’d keep a few small things around for both versions of breakfast. The cinnamon-roll version is also welcome, obviously.

Give the oats a cute place to live

A Kilner 350 ml breakfast jar with a spoon caught my eye as an idea for Pumpkin Spice Overnight Oats. The attached-spoon setup is the appeal: breakfast and its utensil leave together. At 350 ml, this jar suits a smaller serving; leave room to stir and keep any extra oats in another container. I’d pair it with a slim silicone jar spatula for mixing and reaching into jars. Small tool, very specific job.

Pancakes deserve a proper entrance

For Blueberry Lemon Pancakes, a fine citrus zester and a wide pancake turner have two very specific jobs. The zester handles the lemon zest in the batter; the turner gives you more support for the flip. One confident motion is the goal. A folded pancake still tastes like a pancake, but I understand wanting it to arrive flat.

Leave room for the cinnamon rolls

When there’s time for Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls, a pastry mat with measurement guides and an offset icing spatula would be useful little extras. The mat gives the dough a defined rolling surface, and the spatula handles spreading the filling or frosting. No need to aim for bakery-window perfection. Warm cinnamon rolls have a pretty forgiving audience.

Oats on a busy morning, pancakes when there’s time to linger, and cinnamon rolls whenever the weekend allows. The second cup of coffee is welcome in all three situations.
