Notes

This recipe works well for sandwiches but can also be used on tortilla chips with cheese for nachos. We also like it on a mixed salad with tomatoes, cheese and any other item you like on a salad.

A little help in the kitchen

Lori’s ingredient notes: Both beef and turkey are options in this recipe. Cook ground beef to 160°F or ground turkey to 165°F, then drain excess fat before adding the sauce ingredients.

Make it a meal: Add Best Coleslaw and sliced cucumbers beside the sandwich.

Prep ahead: Chop the onion and measure the sauce ingredients before starting. You can fully cook the filling ahead and refrigerate it separately from the rolls.

Tomorrow’s lunch: Spoon reheated filling over a baked potato for a change from sandwiches. Add chopped green onions and a little cheese if you like.

Refrigerate perishable leftovers in shallow containers within 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F), and use within 3–4 days. Reheat cooked leftovers to 165°F. FoodSafety.gov guidance.

A handy skillet helper: An OXO silicone spatula helps break up the ground meat and stir in the tangy sauce for these barbecue sandwiches. Use it to scoop the saucy filling onto the rolls, too. Keep the napkins close—these are happily messy sandwiches.
